WHO IS INVOLVED IN THE ONCI

The Office of the National Chief Imam of the Republic of Ghana (ONCI) serves as the supreme or superior Islamic body in Ghana. It is the current face of Ghanaian Muslims and liaises between Muslims, local Islamic organisations and the Government of Ghana and beyond.

The ONCI is the most credible and recognized Islamic institution in Ghana and is being headed by His Eminence the National Chief Imam and Grand Mufti of the Republic of Ghana, Sheikh Professor Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.

The ONCI, like many other umbrella institutions collaborates with all other Islamic bodies and institutions in Ghana. As such, the Office heads and enjoys its relationship with many auxiliary institutions

The Office of National Chief Imam currently has the following Standing Committees supporting the works of His Eminence the National Chief Imam and the Muslim communities;

1. THE ADVISORY BOARD. Members were chosen from major Islamic sects in Ghana and leading influential Muslims and lawyers in Accra.

2. INTERSECTION COMMITEE comprising representatives of the major Islamic sects in Ghana.

3. THE NATIONAL HALAL CERTIFICATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE includes representatives of the major Islamic sects and some co-opted Muslim technocrats in Ghana.

4. THE DIGITAL AND POPULATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE, comprising representatives of the major Islamic sects and some co-opted Muslim technocrats in Ghana.

5. THE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE, comprising leading Islamic scholars and lawyers with Islamic background to advise and interstate and all other legal related matters

6. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND SPCIAL WELFARE COMMITTEE comprising some leading Muslim women with practical experience in solving domestic

THE FOUR MAJOR ISLAMIC SECTS IN GHANA ARE

1. TIJJANIYA MUSLIMS OF GHANA (TMG) which was rebranded as the TIJJANIYA MUSLIMS MOVEMENT OF GHANA (TMMG)

2. AHLU-SUNNAH WAL JAMAT (ASWAJ)

3. SHIA MUSLIMS COMMUNITY

4. AHAMADIYYAH MUSLIMS MISSION (AMM)

The Office of the National Chief Imam has functional Executive Officers all reportin to the National Executive Secretary, Alhaji Awaisu Bio who has over 2 decades of experience working at the National Head Office.

The ONCI issues marriages certificates to Muslim couples who wish to register their marriages.

It also issues divorce, birth and death certificates in accordance with the Shariah.

Registration to attend Halal Summit in Turkey

The ONCI maintains a very close and strong with the Turkish Embassy in Ghana and the Presidency of Religious Affairs of Turkey.

The Office of the National Chief Imam supervises the operations of the National Halal Certification Committee of Ghana (NHCC) which regulates and ran all Halal projects and initiatives in Ghana.

The ONCI wants to attend the World Halal Summit with some officials of the NHCC.
