PRESS RELEASE ON RAMADAN 2020

Friday 10th April, 2020

PRESS RELEASE

1st SIGHTING FOR THE MOON TO COMMENCE 2020 RAMADAN

In the wake of Covid-19 and the subsequent partial lockdown imposed on two major cities, Accra and Kumasi, this year’s annual National Ramadan and Muslim Development Conference scheduled to take place at Sunyani, the Bone Regional Capital, could not come off. In collaboration with my Office, however, the National Hilal Committee which comprises representatives from all the regions of the country has unanimously agreed on the following:

· Wednesday 25th March, 2020 is considered the first day of Sha’ban.

· Wednesday 22nd April, 2020 is the 29th day of Sha’ban which becomes the sighting day for the commencement of the 2020 fasting.

· If the moon is sighted on this day, then Thursday 23rd April, 2020 becomes the 1st day of Ramadan 2020.

· But if the moon is not sighted, then Thursday 23rd becomes the 30th day of Sha’ban, and Friday 24th April, 2020 automatically becomes the 1st day of Ramadan 2020.

I entreat all Muslims to do the 1st sighting on Wednesday 22nd April 2020.

As usual, all information regarding the sighting should be channeled through the various Regional Chief Imams for onward transmission to the National Headquarters.

I pray to Almighty Allah to protect us from the Covid-19, guide us to the straight path, and extend our lives with good health to Ramadan and many more years to come.

For any clarification, you may contact the Executive Secretary of the ONCI on telephone numbers 0246149885/0264149885.

Yours in Service to Islam and Nation,

Sheikh Prof. Usman Nuhu Sharubutu

The National Chief Imam of Ghana
